Reviews about the breed ENGLISH COKER SPANIEL
When my 15-year-old cocker died, I promised myself that I would never have a dog. Two years after his death, I could not keep my word to myself, which I do not regret now. The choice of breed was not painful, because I knew for sure why I needed a dog (outdoor activities outside the city). 15 years of keeping a cocker spaniel is not a short time and all the pros and cons are well known. I do not suffer from masochism. Sadism towards loved ones, too. I went to the breeder and chose my second dog (although whoever chose whom will remain a mystery). This time it was a bitch. The breeders honestly warned me that the puppy was still a little thing! … But the horror of my choice I realized only after a couple of days of her stay in our house … Now it has been almost a year since our first meeting. There was a lot of things, but I am convinced that if you deal with the dog wisely and, most importantly, understanding what drives your dog’s actions and behavior, you can make your best friend out of any devil! Those who did not manage to raise a cocker spaniel, look for the reasons not in the breed, but in their own mediocrity, as a teacher!
Incredibly smart, friendly to the owner’s family members, the dog is incredulous to outsiders, but DOES NOT display any aggressive aggression when properly educated. Active, energetic, proud, knowing her worth, always ready to work tirelessly and, again, a very smart dog. Probably the best companion for a country outing does not exist! With the beauty of a cocker running along the fallen leaves in the autumn forest, it can be compared, except that the Irish setter. Despite its small size, the dog is able to fend for itself and at the same time “hand out earrings to all sisters.”
The main disadvantage of the breed, oddly enough, is not in the dogs, but in the breeders who have chosen the fundamentally incorrect positioning of the breed. The cocker washed and dried by a hairdryer at the exhibition is very attractive, but, unfortunately, only one side of the coin! The flip side is dirty, after each walk in rainy weather, ears and paws, a rather lengthy shedding process, daily hair care (if you do not want to get tassels instead of a beautiful silky lavish hair on your ears and feet for 2 hours already!), pronounced dog smell, especially in males (which, however, is quite easily eliminated by regular bathing, about once every two weeks. Agree, we have to do this much more often …). But this is not the root of evil. The dog is positioned as a sort of bun-toy, which is suitable as a gift for your beloved child, or will be another accessory for a fashionable woman in high heels, forgetting about her (dog’s) original purpose. I am not an enthusiast of preserving the hunting qualities of the English cocker (unfortunately), and I am not even a hunter, but I never agree with the positioning of the English cocker as a child-female dog (although cocker puppies are probably very charming). The English Cocker Spaniel is, first of all, a male dog, because it was a man who always was a hunter and a getter, and spaniel-like dogs were his faithful helpers. THE DOG SHOULD WORK OR REPLACE TO RECEIVE SUCHLY PHYSICAL AND MENTAL LOAD !!! HER PLACE IS NOT IN BED !!! SHE SHOULD DRAKE FROM THE FIRST DAY IN YOUR HOUSE !!! If the breeders talked about this to the next dads and mothers who appeared on their doorstep in order to acquire live toys for their children, many of the things written in previous reviews about this breed would simply not exist. The English Cocker will not be served like a shepherd, but not because he is stupid! He just knows his own worth, he knows that he is an assistant, if you like, an associate. If your favorite pastime in your free time is watching TV, THIS DOG IS NOT FOR YOU !!! Choose a pug and you will be the happiest owner of a farting-sprinkling adynamic velvet pillow on thin legs (for example, pug lovers will forgive me).
Advice to (future) owners
1. If you really want your dog to become your friend DO NOT BE LAZY AND READ THE BOOK Jen Fennel “How to understand a dog. Learn to speak the language of your best friend.” (There is an Internet) 2. Do not beat your cocker! Except fear of you , you won’t achieve anything, and it will be almost impossible to restore lost trust! The English Cocker Spaniel is intelligent enough to “agree” amicably.
